The Utah chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving consists of mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, uncles, aunts and concerned friends throughout the state all united in one great cause: to prevent drunk driving, support victims of this needless and horrific crime, and eliminate underage drinking. Our members serve on several local and state Coalitions and national boards. MADD-Utah has chosen to stay an all-volunteer organization with no paid staff, but has a dedicated President, Vice-President, Secretary-Treasurer, Board of Directors, and volunteers. We rely on donations from supporters, Victim Impact Panel fees, and contributions from our own pockets to run our work. We are a 501(C)3 charity and all donations are tax-deductible. Our finances are managed by professionals at the MADD National Office, which is carefully audited each year.

We participate in health fairs, speak to schools and parent groups, advocate for better laws, and support law enforcement by donating breathalyzers, advocating for overtime pay for DUI shifts, and providing food and encouragement during late-night DUI stings.

We are a research-based organization—meaning we do extensive research using reputable studies to examine the real causes of drunk driving and underage drinking, rather than being opinion-driven. We are committed to finding a solution to drunk driving – and feel that we have now located causes and prevention strategies. (Click on the “Underage Drinking” and “Prevent Drunk Driving” links.)

We are not prohibitionists, as some have erroneously claimed, but encourage responsible, moderate drinking for those who choose to drink—which is defined by the US Department of Human Services as: “no more than 1 drink per day for women and no more than 2 drinks per day for men.”

We produced a professional, moving “Lives Affected” DVD that relates stories of Utah families who tragically lost loved ones to drunk drivers. We encourage you to view it and make a commitment to not drink underage (if you’re under 21) or supply alcohol to a minor; never drink and drive; and never ride with a drunk driver. Encourage impaired friends to also find a safe way home.

Above all, help us change the social norm that permits drunk driving by speaking out against drunk driving, underage drinking, and public policies that increase bar density and liberal alcohol availability, for studies show they increase drunk driving.

And please, make a donation to MADD-Utah today. Your donations allow us to continue our life-saving work. And who knows, the life we help save might be someone you love.
